Hope is identified as an activating force that enables people, even when faced with the most overwhelming diagnosis and obstacles, to envision a promising future and to set and pursue goals.

Over the past 25 years, research has confirmed the reality of hope as a phenomenon, resulting in the cognitive-based theory of hope within positive psychology.

The Power of Hope

Quote by Paul Valery

Quote by Paul Valery

Hope can be a particularly powerful protector against the dread of a chronic or life-threatening illness.

Hope doesn't need to center on a cure to be useful.  A person's hope even when facing an illness that will likely end their life can be aimed at finding joy or comfort.

Quote by Paul Valery

As human beings, we hope vaguely, and we dread precisely; Our fears are infinitely more precise than our hopes; we confess that the charm of life is behind us, abundance is behind us, but doubt and disorder are in us and with us.

Paul Valery, Disillusionment, Speech 1922

Hope Thinking

Hope Level Strategy

Hope is a composite compromise of not only emotion but thinking as well.

According to hope theory, thinking is at the eve of hope.  Hopeful thinking coupled with goal sharing with the self-assessment of one's ability to attain a goal.

It has been found that hope is both a state that is influenced by circumstances and a trust or disposition that is learned.

Hope Generation

Hope generation in consumer-centric healthcare is a social influence.  It awakens hopeful thinking and is a highlight in consumer-centric healthcare.

Study of patients and caregiver providers from 2 perspectives:

1) One that focuses on positional leadership within an organization hierarchy

2) One that views leadership as a social influence process

High Hope

High Hopers

High-hope individuals are better able to cope with ambiguity and uncertainty and are energized by the challenge of journeying into an undefined future without having all the answers.

High-Hope Patients

High Hopers

High-hope people establish positive relationships with others.  When they engage in group goal attainment efforts, higher hopers make the group not only more productive but also, perhaps equally important, an interpersonally enjoyable arena.

High-hope patients seem more able to employ emotional feedback diagnostically to determine the pathway of getting well.
