Value of Hope at View of Hope
Bottom line to Hope is Self-determination
An important framework in our understanding of hope is Snyder’s hope theory
(1994; 2000) which conceptualizes hope as a cognitive motivational system that enables a
person to engage in goal-directed behaviour even in the face of obstacles. Hope theory
defines hope as “the process of thinking about one’s goals, along with the motivation to move
toward those goals (agency), and the ways to achieve those goals (pathways)." The pathways and agency components of hope are assumed to be trait-like dispositions and are both regarded as necessary for hopeful thinking to occur in the pursuit of one’s goals. The key to self-agency is self-determination. Without self-determination, hope is hopeless.
Thought Life and the Spirit
Thought life is deeply connected to the spirit, especially for those who know God. According to 1 Corinthians 2:11-15, the Spirit plays a vital role in understanding and discerning both our own thoughts and God's thoughts.
The passage teaches that only a person's own spirit truly understands their thoughts. Similarly, only the Spirit of God knows God's thoughts. When people receive the Spirit from God, rather than the spirit of the world, they gain the ability to grasp the gifts and truths that God freely gives.
Those who possess God's Spirit communicate spiritual realities using words taught by the Spirit, not by human wisdom. This means that their understanding and expression are shaped by divine insight, allowing them to explain spiritual truths in a way that transcends ordinary human teaching.
A person who does not have the Spirit of God cannot accept or understand spiritual things, often considering them foolish because such things can only be discerned spiritually. In contrast, someone with the Spirit can make judgments about all things and is not subject to purely human evaluations.
The passage concludes with the assertion that believers possess the mind of Christ. This means their thought life is influenced and guided by Christ Himself, enabling a deeper understanding and discernment of spiritual matters.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.”
Romans 15:13
The beginning of a year invites reflection—but it also invites forward movement. Hope calls us to trust God with what we cannot control and to step forward faithfully with what we can.
In March, we invite you to:
Hope does not deny reality—it gives us the strength to face it.
Heavenly Father,
As we begin March 2026, we realize our plans, our worries, and our hopes in Your hands. Guide our steps, in every second of joy, there's a story of faith; In every moment of desperation, there is hope. Renew our minds, and strengthen our faith. May we be a light to others and a reflection of Your love in all we do.
Amen.
